AviClear is designed for active mild, moderate and severe acne. By reducing activity in the oil glands that contribute to blocked and inflamed follicles, it can help suitable teenagers and adults experience fewer breakouts and a progressive improvement in clearer-looking skin.
The laser uses a 1726 nm wavelength that is strongly absorbed in sebum-rich sebaceous glands. It creates controlled heat below the surface to suppress gland activity and reduce excess oil, while AviCool sapphire contact cooling protects and cools the skin above.
Katy assesses your acne pattern, inflammation, oiliness, skin tone, current products, medicines and scarring risk before recommending the program. AviClear is not a resurfacing treatment for old scars, so she will also explain what to treat first and whether scar treatment should follow once active acne is controlled.
What is happening beneath the skin?
The laser targets the source of excess oil
The handpiece first cools the surface, then delivers laser energy into the oil-producing glands below. The treatment does not peel or remove the outer skin; it changes gland activity so acne can improve progressively after the course.
Because the glands and inflammation change gradually, results can continue developing after the third session. Consistent VISIA imaging or photography helps you and Katy see changes that can be difficult to judge from day to day.

What to expect before, during and after treatment
Understand your acne and create the plan
Katy examines the type, severity and distribution of your breakouts, reviews medicines and current products, and uses VISIA imaging or photography where helpful to establish a clear baseline.
Cool the surface and treat the oil glands
The skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is applied. Katy works systematically across the planned area as the handpiece cools and delivers laser pulses. You may notice cold, warmth or a brief snapping sensation.
Return to your day and watch change develop
Most clients return to normal activities. Temporary redness, swelling, dryness, tenderness or a short acne flare can occur. Follow your aftercare and attend progress reviews as the skin changes over the following months.

In an open-label study of 104 people with moderate-to-severe facial acne, 91.5% of participants attending the 52-week follow-up achieved at least a 50% reduction in inflammatory lesions. At that review, 66.2% were assessed as clear or almost clear.

Redness, swelling, treatment discomfort, dryness, tenderness and a short-term flare can occur. Most clients resume usual activities, but skin response varies.
Contraindications and precautions
Do not proceed during pregnancy or while undergoing treatment for skin cancer. We also screen current or recent isotretinoin use, anticoagulants, open wounds, infection, herpes history, abnormal scarring, pigmentary disorders, inflammatory skin conditions and metal or electronic implants.

What is AviClear?
AviClear by Cutera is a 1726 nm infrared diode laser designed for mild to severe acne vulgaris. It selectively heats sebum-rich sebaceous glands to reduce their activity and excess oil production, helping decrease inflammatory breakouts over time.
How many AviClear treatments will I need?
The standard program is three treatment sessions. Appointments are commonly scheduled about four weeks apart, although Katy confirms the interval after assessing your skin, acne activity and response.
How long does an AviClear appointment take?
Treatment itself is commonly described as approximately 30 minutes for the face. Allow additional time for cleansing, VISIA skin analysis, assessment and preparation.
Does AviClear hurt?
Comfort varies. AviCool sapphire contact cooling helps protect the skin surface and improve comfort. Clients may feel cooling, warmth or a brief snapping sensation. Topical anaesthetic may be used as part of your personalised treatment plan.
When will I see AviClear results?
Improvement is progressive rather than instant. Some clients begin noticing change in the weeks after their treatment course, while published study results continued to improve through six and twelve months. Individual timing and results vary.
Is there downtime after AviClear?
Most clients can return to normal activities, but no planned downtime does not mean no skin response. Temporary redness, swelling, dryness, tenderness or a short-term acne flare can occur.
Can AviClear treat hormonal or cystic acne?
AviClear may be considered when hormonal-pattern or cystic inflammatory acne is present, but it does not diagnose or correct an underlying hormonal condition. Rapidly scarring, severe or medically complex acne may also require medical or dermatology care.
Does AviClear remove acne scars?
AviClear is primarily used to control active acne. It is not a resurfacing treatment for established atrophic acne scars. Once breakouts are controlled, a separate scar assessment may consider fractional CO2 laser, Pico FX, needling or a staged combination plan.
Who should not have AviClear?
AviClear is contraindicated during pregnancy and for clients currently undergoing treatment for skin cancer. Medicines, isotretinoin history, open or infected skin, herpes history, abnormal scarring, pigment disorders and implants must be reviewed during consultation.
